Upcycled Wood Designs specialises in creating custom wood furniture using sustainably sourced and reclaimed materials. Owner and maker, Andrew Dobson, handcrafts home decor and bespoke furniture tailored to clients' specifications, ensuring each piece is unique and meaningful. Each creation is a testament to craftsmanship and environmental responsibility, offering clients unique, eco-conscious timber furniture that elevates their space while considering ecological impact.

Andrew specialises in custom dining tables, bespoke cabinets, coffee tables and one-off statement pieces, emphasizing bespoke pieces crafted from reclaimed and sustainably sourced timbers.

Before Upcycled Wood Designs, Andrew spent more than two decades working in the corporate sector. While the career provided valuable experience in project management, client relationships and problem solving, it never matched his passion for designing and making with timber. Drawn by the satisfaction of creating something tangible with his hands, he made the decision to leave corporate life and pursue furniture making full time.

Andrew inherited his love of wood crafting (and custom furniture) from his Swiss grandfather. He fondly recall days spent as a child watching him carve animals from pieces of wood that he found around Wellington.

Today, Andrew combines thoughtful contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship to create one-of-a-kind pieces that are made to last for generations.

Sustainability sits at the heart of his practice, with many of his works incorporating reclaimed timber salvaged from buildings, bridges and other structures that carry their own unique history. Rather than allowing these materials to become waste, he gives them a second life through decor and furniture that celebrates both the character of the timber and the stories it holds.

Working closely with each client from concept through to completion, he designs furniture that is tailored to its space, balancing functionality, craftsmanship and timeless design. Andrew's work has received commendations in ‘The Maker of the Year awards’ for both craftsmanship and sustainability, reflecting his commitment to producing furniture that is as enduring as it is environmentally responsible.

Few people can say that their livelihood is also their passion. Andrew considers himself to be one of the lucky ones. He started making things with his hands as a child and has never really stopped.
